Spark plug primary function |
Spark plug is part of ignition component
that force high electric energy, discharge the load of electric
energy at the spark plug gap and ignite mixture of air and fuel
inside combustion room. Spark plugs also working under high cylinder
pressures and vibration from the engines. Image below show how
the electrical energy discharges across the spark gap.
Instead of work as igniters for engine, another important function
is to remove the heat out from combustion room. More than 50%
heat dissipated through spark plug metal shell especially at spark
plug thread section.
Why spark plug need replacement? |
Every
time a spark plug spark, a tiny amount of metal is
vaporize and lost from both electrodes. Especially
the center electrode suffers the most wear from heat
erosion. As the electrode wear, the spark plug gap
becomewider and wider and need more voltage to spark
across the gap and the ignition function start to
mis-fire and may cause engine damages.

Volker Iridium adopted Volker Nano-Crystalline technology
for processing 99.5% pure Iridium + 0.05% Osmium
and Rhodium composites metal. The metals are sintered
in 2400 °C Hydrogen environment produce SUPER

In
order to match with Ø 0.5 mm Super iridium
life time, over sizes Platinum alloy (Ø 1.0
mm) is needed. It’s perfectly matched for
optimum spark plug life time and scientifically
tested on the road for around 200,000 km(*) without
any replacement.

Volker YAG Laser welded for both Super iridium and Platinum
tips. |
Volker factory adopted the most advance welding technology
as standard for all Volker iridium products. It’s
German patent pending Volker YAG Laser welded technology.
The processing methods are:
• Super
Iridium welded with 360° 6 pointer laser beams.
• Platinum
tip welded with 360° 40 pointer laser beams.

Volker Iridium plasma arc spark |
Volker spark plug electrodes designed in such way
to guide the spark to be more concentrated (focused)
and create higher intensity plasma arc spark. Below
illustration is to understand how the plasma arc
spark ignites the air-fuel mixture in high engine
compression and make bigger explosion.
(*) Plasma arc spark: Higher
intensity electric energy discharge across spark
gap.
Below is the real picture of plasma arc spark and
it’s not computer simulation, showed that
how strong concentrated plasma spark energy guided
to across spark gap.

Both Volker Iridium and Volker
Iridium racing uses Ø 0.5 mm Super Iridium
alloy center electrode and Ø 1.0 mm
Platinum alloy tipped ground electrode as standard.
With Volker Iridium –
plasma arc spark also provides:
•
Up to 37% more horse power and torque output.
•
More stable ignition and stable solid acceleration.
•
Prevent mis-fire.
•
Improves cold and morning initial start.
•
Cleaner combustion room (sweep away all unburned
fuel residual) improved engine life time.
•
Reduce exhaust emission as combustion efficiency
improved.
•
Reduce fuel consumption.
•
Save costly catalytic converter.
•
Maintain longevity secondary ignition parts with
6,000 volt lower energy consumption.
(*) Secondary ignition parts: Ignition coil, spark
plug cable and spark plug cap.
With lower 6,000 volt energy consumption means that
secondary ignition parts work with less strain,
colder working temperature and maintenance free.
Race mechanics always use bigger capacity ignition
system which produces up to 120,000 volt to achieve
bigger spark. Combination of Volker iridium and
high performance ignition system might produce super
strong plasma arc which use for most race &
high performance engine, stable firing at high RPM
and prevent mis-fire. Such combinations have been
tested for high performance and heavy modified engine
which boosted up to 1,500 hp output.

Volker hi-tech sintering technology |
Volker
factory is equipped with high technology vacuum sintering
facility to produce spark plug ceramic insulator.
Volker Iridium ceramic insulator is formed from ceramic
insulator materials. The materials are mixed and formed
in extremely clean environment, glaze layering coated
and sintered in 1,600 °C vacuum environment.
Ceramic insulator is very critical part for spark
plug, especially at the insulator nose which wrapped
the iridium electrode receive same great sever high
temperature, high cylinder pressure and vibration
from engine.
Strict quality control carried 100% check for each
piece of Volker iridium ceramic insulator, as following:
•
Voltage leakage test at room temperature
with 60,000 volt energy.
•
Heat insulation resistance test in 500°C
temperature with resistance value should be minimum
1 M?.
•
Insulation resistance test in room temperature
with resistance value should be 50 M? or above.

Volker Polystyrene (PS) box as Volker Iridium standard
packaging. |
Problems
of ceramic cracks, broken spark plug tips, uneven
of spark plug gap, bent spark plug gap, rusty spark
plug metal shell are the most common problems and
90%+ possibilities is caused during handling, shipping
and stock keeping.
Volker use environment friendly (recyclable) Polystyrene
(PS) box for all Volker Iridium spark plugs as standard.
Each Volker iridium spark plug is individually packed
with PS box. The PS box is drop tested; shocks proofed
and prevent attacks from high humid which may cause
rust problem.
